How do you clean the cooking grate on a grill?

I have a charcoal grill, and the cooking grate needs to be cleaned. What's the best way to clean it?How do you clean the cooking grate on a grill?
after you are done cooking your food, allow the grate to burn the foods on (yes u heard me right) by putting the lid back on the grill and forgetting about it...

then, before you light it the next time, brush your grate with a wire brush from the bbq section of wal mart... i like the one with a long wooden handle and a blade on the reverse side to get any drips...

after it is scraped clean, it is ready to use... do not bother with water because it is used at temps exceeding 500* F and you have no worries of bacteria surviving THAT!

enjoy you ';new'; bbq!

use pipe cleaners and use a grease removal product
Personally, I cleanse with fire! I then brush off the charred remains with a brass grill brush. This has worked much better that trying to use chemicals or spending much time trying to scour it clean.
get a brush thats made out of wire and scrub it
Oven cleaner! Spray it on, let it soak in.....grime comes right off.

Have fun!
Steel brush, plus burn the gunk off with a few minutes at ';high'; setting (presuming you're using propane).
